In dominating fashion, the Edmonton Oilers demolished the San Jose Sharks 5-0 on Thursday night.
Edmonton got goals from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Zach Hyman, Leon Draisaitl, Evan Bouchard, and Ryan McLeod. Stuart Skinner, who won his 12th game of the season, made 26 saves for the shutout.
Magnus Chrona started his first career NHL start but was pulled after the first period. He was forced into a tough situation with the Sharks on the second back-to-back game. He stopped eight shots. Kaapo Kahkonen came on in relief and made 16 saves.
"I feel bad for him. We didn't do a good job playing defense in front of him tonight. You take them out, really [to] protect them in a lot of ways and not subject him to our lapses defensively," Sharks coach David Quinn said postgame. "If you're gonna have a chance to beat that team, you've got to be committed to playing defense, and we just got away from structure tonight defensively big time."
"Short memory. His first start is supposed to be special, and we let him down," Kyle Burroughs said.
From the drop of the puck, San Jose was a step behind. The Oilers dominated puck possession and skated circles around the Sharks. Edmonton could do whatever they wanted.
The Sharks have lost seven straight games and sit at the bottom of the NHL standings.
"We have to fight for our fans. We have to fight for the players in this locker room because it's family," Tomas Hertl said postgame.
Despite the loss and defensive issues, Quinn was able to see some positives.
"You see Henry Thrun out there defending McDavid and doing a pretty good job," Quinn said. "Okhotiuk doing the same type of thing. There are some good things that went on tonight."
Ryan McLeod beats Chrona on the far side. The Oilers had possession for the entire opening minute before McLeod scored.
Connor McDavid feathers a pass to Zach Hyman to extend the Oilers lead to two. Hyman is up to 20 goals this season.
Evan Bouchard fires a 97 mph slap shot from the point to make it a 3-0 game.
Leon Draisaitl makes it 4-0 Oilers. Edmonton has dominated the first period. Chrona is being left for dead.
After the Oilers possessed the puck for an extended period, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored his ninth goal of the season. The Oilers are skating circles around the Sharks.
