Derek Cain-USA TODAY Sports - REPORT: Former Sharks Top Prospect Linked With Canucks

Former San Jose Sharks top prospect Sasha Chmelevski has been linked to the Vancouver Canucks.

As Weekes reports, the Sharks still hold the rights to the winger's contract, but he has been granted permission to work with other teams. Chmelevski was drafted in 2017 in the 6th round.

He has played 24 games at the NHL level and has ten assists. Now playing in the KHL with Salavat Yulaev Ufa, Chmelevski scored 48 points in 67 games during the 22-23 season. He's upped his production this season, scoring 43 points in 49 games.

Chmelecski is represented by Dan Milstein. Milstein made headlines this season as he helped the trade of Nikita Zadorov from the Calgary Flames to the Canucks.

He also represents Andrei Kuzmenko and Ilya Mikheyev, who are also Canucks players.

San Jose is in the middle of a massive rebuild, and adding draft capital is crucial to Mike Grier's plan. San Jose clearly doesn't have Chmelevski in its future plans, and if they can trade his rights, getting anything in return could be seen as a success.

The NHL Trade Deadline is March 8th, and the Sharks should be one of the busiest teams.
