After seemingly months and months of speculation, the San Jose Sharks have officially acquired defenseman Darnell Nurse from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Shakir Mukhamadullin and prospect Zack Sharp.
Nurse carries a cap hit of $9.25 million for the next four years. While Nurse is an effective second pairing defenseman, much of the criticism surrounding him is simply due to his contract. With the salary cap rising, and players like Bowen Byram making more than $12 million per season, it seems like Nurse's cap hit will be the norm for second-pairing defensemen in the near future which makes it a bit easier to digest for the Sharks.
Nurse had a down season offensively during the 2025-26 campaign, as he scored just seven goals and 24 points in 82 games. All-in-all though, he's been a reliable offensive defenseman for the majority of his career with some major mistakes on occasion.
Nurse is the Sharks' second addition on the blue line in the free agency period, as they signed former New York Rangers captain Jacob Trouba to a significant deal shortly after free agency began. With the Sharks' moves, it seems clear that Grier is looking to load up for a potential playoff push this summer.
