According to Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli, the San Jose Sharks have signed newly acquired goalie Mackenzie Blackwood to a two-year deal.
Blackwood was acquired from the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday in exchange for a 2023 sixth-round pick.
GM Mike Grier opted not to give a qualifying offer to Blackwood, which would've meant he would be an unrestricted free agent once the signing period opened. First reported by Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli, Blackwood never made it to the open market.
“Mackenzie is a big, athletic goaltender with a lot of potential and upside,” Grier said. “He will be a good addition to our goaltender group.”
The thought behind this move is that Blackwood's QO would be $4.125 million AAV, much higher than the cap hit he eventually reportedly signed for. Given what Seravalli reports, Blackwood's cap hit would be $2.35 million AAV.
The San Jose Sharks will have a goaltending competition come training camp. Kaapo Kahkonen, Eetu Makiniemi, and Blackwood are the goalies expected to fight for the starting role.
