The 2023 World Junior Summer Showcase is underway, and San Jose Sharks GM Mike Grier wanted to watch himself.
The Sharks have seven prospects at the showcase. First-round picks from the 2023 NHL Draft, Will Smith, and Quentin Musty, are on Team USA.
Cam Lund and Eric Pohlkamp are also with Team USA.
Filip Bystedt and Mattias Havelid are playing together for Team Sweden. Kasper Halttunen is playing for Team Finland.
In today's matchup of Team USA Blue, Smith and Musty were put on a line together, while Lund played higher in the lineup.
Bystedt and Havelid face off against their prospect counterparts, and according to Ryan Kennedy, they stood out during the first period.
Although Grier just saw all seven prospects at San Jose Sharks development camp, getting a closer look at a player when something is on the line may provide a different view.
The prospects playing in the Summer Showcase are trying to make an impression to be invited back for the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championships.
The player that has the most on the line is Bystedt. There was uncertainty about whether he would return to Sweden or come to North America and play with the San Jose Barracuda.
Whatever the case, Grier is keeping a close eye on his top prospects.
