The San Jose Sharks have announced they’ve signed former New York Islanders goalie Jakub Skarek to a one-year deal worth $775,000.
Skarek, 25, was drafted by the Islanders in the third round of the 2018 NHL Draft. He’s spent most of his career in the American Hockey League (AHL), including last season. He’s only appeared in two NHL games. In those two games, he started once and posted a record of 0-1-0, with a .872 save percentage and a 3.94 goals against average. During his time in the AHL, he’s appeared in 161 games and has a 49-84-16 record, with a .890 save percentage and a 3.34 goals against average.
Sharks general manager Mike Grier spoke with NHL.com about the signing and had this to say:
"Jakub has a plethora of professional experience in net at just 25 years old," said Grier. "He is a big, athletic goaltender with a lot of compete in his game."
With the Sharks having Yaroslav Askarov and Alex Nedeljkovic under contract for the upcoming season, it’s pretty clear Skarek will be the team’s third goalie. He’ll likely report to the San Jose Barracuda after training camp ends, where he’ll serve as the organization’s main call-up option.
