Smith now joins William Eklund, Alexander Wennberg, and Macklin Celebrini, who have all confirmed they’ll represent their respective countries at the tournament.
In his rookie season, Smith made his mark skating alongside Celebrini. He finished the year with 18 goals and 27 assists for 45 points in 78 games and played a major role for the Sharks right from the jump. That experience should go a long way in helping his development early in his career.
Now, he’ll get the chance to grow his game even more by playing with some of the best NHL talent in the world.
At this point, no official rosters have been released, but based on who’s already committed, Smith is expected to play alongside Clayton Keller, Logan Cooley, and Cutter Gauthier. There’s also been some rumblings that Dustin Wolf and Jeremy Swayman will be in goal for Team USA.
Another thing to keep in mind — Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky will be behind the bench for Team USA, which could open the door for Smith to play a big role in the tournament.
