Robert Edwards-USA TODAY Sports - BREAKING: Sharks Defenseman Out For Remainder Of Season

The San Jose Sharks announced that defenseman Matt Benning will miss the remainder of the season.

The team announced that Benning underwent successful hip surgery that will keep him out for the remainder of the 23-24 NHL season.

Benning played in 14 games this season and had two assists. Benning is expected to be ready for the Sharks 2024 training camp. The expected recovery time for Benning is approximately five months.

The 29-year-old has two years remaining on his contract with a cap hit of $1.25 million. He was subject to trade rumors due to his low cap hit and term of two years remaining.

San Jose will likely move Benning to LTIR in the coming days to free up even more cap space. His last game played was on Dec. 3 against the New York Rangers.
