Stan Szeto-USA TODAY Sports - BREAKING: Sharks Place Rutta On IR; Benning & Sturm Return

The San Jose Sharks have placed defenseman Jan Rutta on IR and have activated Matt Benning.

On Wednesday, Rutta took a hard hit in the first period against the Seattle Kraken.

Rutta missed the remainder of the game. Sharks head coach David Quinn said Rutta has an upper-body injury that will be considered week-to-week.

He has been a significant addition to the backend this season. He has been paired with multiple partners and has been terrific in what he is asked to do.

Matt Benning is activated from IR and is back after missing nearly a month of action. His last game came on Oct. 29 against the Washington Capitals. Benning has one assist in eight games.

Quinn confirmed that Nico Sturm has returned from his leave and will be in the lineup today against the Montreal Canadiens.

Quinn confirmed that Sturm had to return to Germany during his personal leave.

He will be a welcome addition to the lineup, as the entire team needs to copy his speed and work ethic.
