The San Jose Sharks have placed All-Star center Tomas Hertl on injured reserve, and the team announced that he will miss several weeks with a knee injury.
"Today, Tomas Hertl made the decision to undergo a surgical procedure to clean out loose cartilage in his left knee," Mike Grier said in a statement today. "He is expected to miss a minimum of several weeks but the exact timetable is still to be determined based on the findings of the procedure and his rehabilitation. We will monitor his progress during the rehab process and provide an update on his status at a later date. Due to the nature of this injury, the Sharks were completely comfortable with Tomas' decision to participate in the All-Star Weekend, and we respect his decision to have this procedure done now."
Hertl missed the Sharks final two games before the All-Star break against the Seattle Kraken and Anaheim Ducks. He still played in the All-Star game in Toronto.
As seen in the statement by Hertl above, this injury is something he has been dealing with for the majority of the season. The Sharks have held two practices since returning, and Hertl did not participate.
Head coach David Quinn said Hertl's absence on Saturday was a planned day off, but that seems to have changed.
He leads the team in goals with 15 and has been the unquestioned locker room leader during Logan Couture's absence.
The Sharks haven't had their top four centers in a lineup once this season, and against the Winnipeg Jets looked like the first opportunity for San Jose to get Herl, Couture, Mikael Granlund, and Nico Sturm in the same lineup.
