JJ Peterka scored two goals for the Buffalo Sabres as they beat the San Jose Sharks 5-2 on Saturday afternoon.
"It just looked like we thought it was going to be easy," Sharks head coach David Quinn said postgame. "I thought we came out with a lot of energy, a lot of pace, and then all of a sudden, we get up two nothing, and then it just was funny how it just changed. We just got away from skating and competing and playing responsible and we just weren't able to get it back."
Peterka now leads the Sabres with 18 goals this season. Buffalo got goals from Alex Tuch, Jordan Greenway, and Dylan Cozens. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 23 saves for his 12th win of the season.
The Sharks jumped out to an early two-goal lead in the first period but gave up four unanswered goals. Marc-Edouard Vlasic scored his 3rd of the season, and Jan Rutta scored his second. Kaapo Kahkonen made 31 saves.
Shakir Mukhamadullin made his NHL debut and started. He finished the game with 18:39 TOI. He had three shots on goal.
"I liked his first shift," Quinn said of Mukhamadullin. "He stepped up, made a hit. Skated. Poise. You can see why he was a first-round draft pick."
Rutta extends his career-long points streak to four. William Eklund had two primary assists tonight.
Marc-Edouard Vlasic scores his third goal of the season with a hard shot from the half-wall. The Sharks finally got a good zone entry as William Eklund and Ty Emberson picked up assists.
"Vintage Marc-Edouard Vlasic," Logan Couture said postgame.
Jan Rutta floats one to the net, and a Sabres player deflects the puck, causing it to get past Lukkonen. Eklund picked up his second assist.
JJ Peterka scores his 17th goal of the season with a tap-in. The puck was wrapped around by Dylan Cozens and squirted out in front.
Jordan Greenway scores his 6th goal of the season to tie the game at two. Alex Tuch made a great move before the pass.
Alex Tuch scores his 14th goal of the season after a defensive zone turnover by San Jose.
The Sharks shoot a puck wide, and the puck rims around the boards like a breakout pass. Peterka scores his second of the game on the odd-man rush.
Dylan Cozens makes a nice move at his blue line to get himself to open space before putting the puck in the empty net.
