Per reports, the NHL has banned the use of players using pride tape during warmups.
In a memo sent out by the NHL, the league clarified any 'confusion' about the ban on specialty jerseys.
Ryan Clark of ESPN got the report of the clarification from a team source.
"The update was sent because of "confusion" about the guidance, the league source said. The new, "much clearer" memo explained that restrictions cover on-ice activity and noted that "players should be encouraged to express themselves off the ice," the team source said. Player participation in club-related messaging is voluntary if permitted," Clark writes.
In the original rule, commissioner Gary Bettman stated that wearing the specialty jerseys has become a distraction.
Seven NHL players chose not to wear the LGBTQ+ Jersey last season, including former San Jose Sharks goalie James Reimer.
According to Outsports, players can no longer use pride tape.
"The league has told the organization behind Pride Tape — the rainbow tape that has been used by several NHL players on their sticks during warmups to signify their support for the LGBTQ community — that no player this season will be allowed to use the tape on their stick during warmups, games or even practices," Cyd Zeigler writes.
Players will now be faced with supplemental discipline if they break this rule. The discipline could be a fine or even a suspension.
The community built around "Hockey is For Everyone" doesn't seem to be for everyone. That's not to mention how expensive hockey gear is. Sticks, pads, skates, and all equipment can cost nearly $2,000.
Jersey bans, sure, but if players want to show their support off the ice, why is using rainbow tape during warmups so bad?
A small gesture can allow players to provide support in their own way, allowing them more freedom to support whatever they want. That includes if players don't want to wear any specialty jersey or tape for religion or other reasons.
Look, everyone is entitled to their own choice, but don't go around saying hockey is for everyone, then take away the opportunities for the players and teams to support that.
