Dean Tait - Sport Shots - 'It Was A Special First Year': Yaroslav Askarov Thankful For Former Sharks Goalie

When Yaroslav Askarov came to North America, he was partnered with former San Jose Sharks goalie Devin Cooley on the Milwaukee Admirals.

Askarov had just come from Russia as a 20-year-old who spoke little English. His goalie partner, Cooley, really helped him, and Askarov is incredibly thankful to this day for how patient he was with him.

"He helped me a lot. [It was a] special first year," Askarov told THN. "[I moved] from different country. It is super, super hard because [it is a] different culture, different mentality and stuff. He helped me a lot with everything."

Askarov played 48 games for the Admirals compared to Cooley's 26. Askarov got 12 games in the postseason and Cooley four, but that didn't stop the two from enjoying their time together.

"He was pretty nice with me every time. He gave me time. Every time I tried to tell him something, he was like, All right, take your time," Askarov said,

Askarov's English is much improved, but there is still an apparent disconnect at times despite the great personality and quotes. Cooley, a Los Gatos, Calif. native, was a calming influence for Askarov during a critical time for his hockey and life adjustment to North America.

The two reunited at the AHL All-Star Classic from Feb. 2 to 3, bringing back their iconic sumo celebration.

"[It was] amazing, man," Askarov said.

Askarov couldn't help but poke fun at his former tandem partner regarding food recommendations.

"Nah, nah, nah, not that good," Askarov joked.

Cooley revitalized his career with the San Jose Sharks last season and, along with Askarov, is one of the best goalies in the AHL this season.
