Kyle Burroughs has taken a leadership role in the San Jose Sharks locker room in a big way.
Burroughs has been considered a veteran player who can show the young players what it is like to be in the NHL day in and day out.
"He's a guy that's respected, and the guys appreciate his honest effort," Sharks head coach David Quinn said.
While on the ice, Burroughs has had an up-and-down season. Last night against the Edmonton Oilers, Burroughs finished at -5 in a 5-0 loss. He has brought a physical presence and has been a nice pair with Mario Ferraro.
"[We've got] guys in their first seasons. It's got to be from the veterans in the room," Burroughs said about where leadership is coming from. "We need to do a better job of that."
San Jose is in the middle of a seven-game losing streak. Without their captain, Logan Couture, the other captains, Ferraro and Tomas Hertl, are stepping up. There is only so much they can do, and Burroughs has stepped in and become a leader without a letter on his jersey.
"Anytime you get to play that much, it's fun," Burroughs said about playing with Ferraro.
He has stepped up in more ways than on the ice. He has begun to face the media in tougher situations when the team needs another voice. There is only so much Hertl and Ferraro can do/say.
He's always thinking about preparation and how that can affect his on-ice play.
"On the body, it's still still a game," Burroughs explained. "In the summertime and during the season, you try to be as ready as you can and train for these moments for your body to hold up."
Burroughs is becoming a leader for this San Jose Sharks team at a time where they need more than just Hertl and Ferraro.
