Seattle Kraken forward Jared McCann has appeared on The Fourth Period's Offseason Trade List Board.
The 29-year-old came in at 15 on the list, one of the two Kraken players to appear alongside defenseman Jamie Oleksiak.
McCann heard rumors around the trade deadline that he could be made available in trades, but the Kraken weren't actively shopping him. The situation likely remains the same, as the Kraken have still deferred from putting him on the market, but he continues to be an attractive piece.
"With two more years left on his contract, McCann is an attractive add for teams looking to add more scoring punch to their lineup. He has a 10-team no-trade list and has some say in where he winds up if the Kraken decide to trade him," said The Fourth Period.
McCann has been the driving force of the Kraken's offence in their first four seasons. He's recorded at least 50 more points in each season, eclipsing 60 twice and 70 once. He's also scored no fewer than 22 goals, which occurred this season. Trading McCann has both its positives and negatives.
For the positives, it allows the Kraken to begin a full retool, utilizing their young emerging players in more advanced roles. Matty Beniers, Shane Wright, Kaapo Kakko, and Jani Nyman have shown flashes that they could be the building blocks they need to develop the team into a contender and moving McCann off the roster would allow each of them more ice time and additional power play time.
Moving McCann would also fetch a strong return. With his skillset and the value of his $5M cap hit, the Kraken could gather a first-round pick and a top prospect or roster player to add to their current core.
Signing Chandler Stephenson Could Have Long-Term Implications For The Kraken
In the 2024 offseason, the Seattle Kraken signed Chandler Stephenson to a seven-year, $6.25M contract and after one season, the long-term implications don't seem very positive.
The negatives of moving McCann would be their record next season. Without McCann, the team will struggle to score goals and win games for most, if not the entire season. He's led the team in points each season and led in goals for three of the four. He's not only an efficient goal scorer, but he also creates plenty of chances for himself and his linemates. Losing that would take a long time to replace.
If offers do come in for McCann, it'll put general manager Jason Botterill in a difficult situation. Weighing the pros and cons of their future and the current state of the team will be something he'll need to strongly consider and decide on.
