Former Tampa Bay Lightning assistant coach Derek Lalonde's time as head coach of the Detroit Red Wings is over. The 52-year-old has been fired by the Original Six club and replaced by Todd McLellan.
Lalonde had been on the heat seat for quite some time in Detroit, and now his time with the organization has officially come to a close. This is after the Red Wings started the season with an underwhelming 13-17-4 record. In addition, they were not showing signs of improvement, as they lost three straight games and seven out of their last 10 before Lalonde's firing.
In 198 games as head coach of the Red Wings, Lalonde had an 89-86-23 record.

Before being named head coach of the Red Wings at the start of the 2022-23 season, Lalonde was an assistant coach for the Lightning from 2018 to 2022. He notably helped the Bolts win back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2020 and 2021.
While Lalonde's time in Detroit has ended, he has the potential to secure another job in the NHL. It will be fascinating to see where he ends up next from here.
