NHL Player Safety has suspended Tampa Bay Lightning top prospect Conor Geekie for one pre-season game.
According to NHL Player Safety, Geekie was given this one-game suspension for breaking NHL Rule 70.2: "Leaving the players' bench on a legal line change for the purpose of starting an altercation."
During the Lightning's pre-season matchup against the Florida Panthers, Panthers forward Josh Davies threw a hard hit on superstar defender Victor Hedman. Nikita Kucherov quickly defended his captain during the play.
Later in the contest, Geekie also stood up for his captain on the play that would lead to his suspension. After stepping on the ice, Geekie skated at Davies and immediately dropped the gloves. Geekie was given two-minute cross-checking, two-minute instigator, five-minute fighting, and 10-minute misconduct penalties on the play.
