Former Lightning Forward Not Slowing Down

The former Tampa Bay Lightning forward seems to be back to his old self.

The Tampa Bay Lightning are getting ready to play their first game since Saturday January 27. They shake off their All-Star break rust tonight against the New York Rangers. The Rangers were one of the first teams back in action - and they squeaked out a 2-1 win against the Colorado Avalanche on Monday night.

Another game tonight - that may interest Lightning fans - is the Minnesota Wild versus the Chicago Blackhawks game. The Wild, of course, have two former Lightning on their team in Zach Bogosian and Pat Maroon.

Bogosian played in the Wild's last game against the Anaheim Ducks, primarily on an even strength pairing with Jonas Brodin. Maroon is currently on injured reserve. Despite being injured, Maroon is having a "back to form" season.

He had a down year last year. He only scored on a 0.18 points per game pace, which led to accumulating 14 points in 80 games. His overall ice time and power play usage dropped significantly. He only earned six seconds of power play time and 10:21 of overall ice time per game last year - he hasn't seen totals like that since he first entered the league.

In the 2012-13 season he played 13 games with the Ducks (he had played two games the year prior). During that stretch he had three points, 22 hits, 26 seconds of power play time and averaged 9:47 per game.

In the 2023-24 season he has a 0.33 points per game pace. Maroon has 16 points in 49 games. He's averaging 50 seconds on the power play and 12:46 overall.

On top of all that, he isn't slowing down in the fighting department. He fought 12 times last year and 10 times in 2021-22. He currently has six fights this year.

His most recent fight occurred on January 12, against the Philadelphia Flyers. Here is the fight he had with Nic Deslauriers.

Maroon appears to have regained some spark of his game from previous years. He will be someone to keep your eyes on in the next month as the Trade Deadline approaches.

I think the big question is does Marner go to market? If so, it feels like the Canes have as good as chance as anyone to land him. I believe he is certainly affordable for the Canes with their ample cap space.
