While players like Sean Walker and Nick Seeler have been in the rumor mill, the Flyers have another defenseman who could be dealt.
The Philadelphia Flyers are preparing to be sellers at the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline. Although they are having an impressive season, management is committing to their rebuilding plan, which means players will be moved.
Sean Walker, Nick Seeler, and Morgan Frost have been three Flyers generating plenty of buzz in the rumor mill. Yet, the Flyers have another player who should be viewed as an under-the-radar trade candidate along with them – Marc Staal.
Staal, 37, is a pending UFA who could be a strong rental addition for teams looking to add a bit more depth to their defense before the deadline passes. He not only has an easily affordable $1.1 million cap hit, but he also comes with 17 years of NHL experience. Playoff teams value that kind of experience, and that could lead to him receiving interest.
Staal has appeared in 17 games this season with the Flyers, where he has one goal, one assist, and a plus-1 rating.
Overall, Staal would be a serviceable bottom-pairing or even seventh defenseman for a playoff team. It will be intriguing to see if he gets moved before the deadline from here. One specific team to watch is the Florida Panthers. He worked well there last season.
