Calle Jarnkrok Out Week-to-Week With a Broken Knuckle and How Maple Leafs Will Adjust Without Him Against the Jets

Jarnkrok took a puck off the hand in practice on Friday and the Leafs will make adjustments without the versatile forward.

WINNIPEG — The Toronto Maple Leafs will be without the services of Calle Jarnkrok for the foreseeable future after head coach Sheldon Keefe revealed Saturday that the forward suffered a broken knuckle and will be re-evaluated on a "week-to-week" basis.

"I think everybody today is going to expect to do a little bit more," Keefe said following the Leafs' optional skate at Canada Life Centre. "Whether that's from our bottom guys moving up or power play and penalty kill minutes that are available now.

"Even some of our top guys, at times, are going to have to double up a little bit."

The Maple Leafs visit the Winnipeg Jets to finish off a home-and-home series before both teams head off for the NHL-mandated bye week. Keefe didn't reveal lines but mentioned players like Noah Gregor and Nick Robertson as some that could see more ice time.

Gregor, who had moved off the team's fourth line before when opportunities were available, could move up from the fourth line. Gregor played one game on the top like with Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner when Matthew Knies was sick earlier this season. Robertson could see more playing time after a career-high 17:08 in a 1-0 victory against the Jets on Wednesday.

The Leafs will also get Tyler Bertuzzi back after he missed the last game to attend the birth of his second child.

Ryan Reaves will enter the lineup as the team's 12th forward. The Winnipeg native hasn't played in a game since Dec. 14 and told Sportsnet's Luke Fox earlier in the month that he had been healthy for a while, despite still being on the team's injured reserve list.

Jarnkrok has played on the Leafs' second power play and penalty units and his penalty-killing responsibilities will be particularly difficult to replace. Auston Matthews and William Nylander have seen more time on the club's second penalty kill unit at times and it's likely you see more of them tonight against the Jets.

The 32-year-old Jarnkrok has 10 goals and nine assists in 46 games this season.
