Lagesson has been claimed off waivers by the Ducks, giving Toronto an extra $775,000 in cap space ahead of the trade deadline.
The Maple Leafs lose William Lagesson off waivers, but gain some more cap space ahead of the NHL trade deadline.
Toronto placed Lagesson on waivers on Thursday afternoon after acquiring Joel Edmundson from the Washington Capitals. The Maple Leafs also moved Conor Timmins from IR to LTIR to free up cap space to allow for the Edmundson trade.
With Lagesson going to Anaheim, Toronto now has $1.14 million in cap space. The Maple Leafs are also sending Matthew Knies to the Marlies, as a paper transaction, to create more cap space, according to TSN insider Chris Johnston.
Lagesson appeared in 30 games for the Maple Leafs this season, but was the odd man out on the team's defense. And since he's played that many games since being with the Marlies, waivers was needed for the defenseman to go down to the AHL.
The 28-year-old had four assists in 30 games with Toronto this season.
Toronto had already sent down Nick Robertson earlier this week as he was one of two players (Knies is the other) who are waivers exempt this season. Once the trade deadline ends, the NHL's 23-man roster limit is over, and the Maple Leafs can carry as many players as they want as long as they're under the $83.5 million salary cap.
Knies being on the Marlies' roster ahead of the NHL trade deadline allows him eligibility to play for AHL Toronto in the Calder Cup Playoffs, if the Maple Leafs are eliminated from the playoffs.
With Lagesson off the books and Knies going to the AHL, the Maple Leafs will have just over $2 million in cap space to play around with before the 3:00 p.m. deadline.
