Following Captaincy Switch to Auston Matthews, You Can Already Purchase a New John Tavares Jersey Sporting an 'A' at Maple Leafs' Real Sports Apparel Store

After it was confirmed that the now-former captain of the Leafs would be an alternate captain, the team's apparel store began selling the new-look Tavares jersey.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are making a captaincy change. The Hockey News breaks down why Auston Matthews will become the 26th captain in franchise history.

The Toronto Maple Leafs held their captaincy reveal and switch on Wednesday at the club-owned Real Sports restaurant. When the event concluded and you left the facility, across the hall was the team's Real Sports apparel store with Auston Matthews' new captain jersey displayed in three different varieties.

Auston Matthews was named the 26th captain in franchise history on Wednesday after John Tavares passed the captaincy over to him. During the event, Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving confirmed that Tavares would be wearing an 'A' as a team alternate captain with the decisions on the others to be made later.

On the Real Sports apparel store website, the Leafs have Tavares' jersey sporting the new 'A' look.

Treliving said a decision on the other alternates would be made at a later date, but that didn't stop Real Sports from promoting the new leadership.

The apparel store still sells Mitch Marner and Morgan Rielly jerseys retaining their 'A'.

The NHL only allows three players to wear a letter on the front of their jersey in any respective game. Matthews and Marner had alternated between the two wearing the 'A' and it's not clear how that shift will take place with the current group.

It wouldn't be a surprise to see no changes in the leadership group with the core as it stands right now, especially if the roster stays the way it does between now and the start of training camp.

Tavares and Marner are both in the final year of their respective contracts and are unrestricted free agents at the end of the upcoming season.
