Holl has two years remaining on his contract after signing a three-year, $10.2 million contract in 2023.

The Detroit Red Wings have placed veteran defenseman Justin Holl on waivers, according to several reports, including from TSN's Chris Johnston.

The former Toronto Maple Leafs player signed a three-year deal with the Detroit Red Wings last season worth $10.2 million. Although things started well for Holl when at one point he was leading the NHL in plus/minus, he began to struggle and often found himself as a healthy scratch.

Holl was limited to just 38 games last season where he had five assists. The 32-year-old defenseman was in Toronto on Saturday for pre-season action against his former club. After the game, he greeted former teammates Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner.

Holl, originally drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the second round (54th overall) during the 2010 NHL draft, struggled to find footing at the professional level before the Leafs signed him to an AHL-only contract. They eventually signed him to an NHL-level deal, and he played parts of seven seasons with Toronto, scoring 11 goals and adding 76 assists in 323 games.

With NHL rosters beginning to trim, it was apparent that Holl wasn't in the club's top-six defensive plans. When off the team roster, he'll still account for $2.25 million of salary cap hit, as only $1.15 million of his $3.4 salary cap can be buried.
