Engvall signed a seven-year, $21 million contract with the Islanders last year.
The New York Islanders were making a big bet when they signed forward Pierre Engvall to a seven-year contract, and now they are paying the price for it.
According to THN's Stefan Rosner, the Islanders waived the former Toronto Maple Leafs forward as part of a league-wide waiver-wire frenzy to get under the NHL's $88 million salary cap.
Lou Lamoriello spoke to Rosner on Sunday explaining how rookie Maxim Tsyplakov earned a spot in the team's lineup.
"It's as simple as that. It's not that he did anything wrong, but he lost the job at this point. He is not a bottom-six player," Lamoriello reasoned.
The NHL's waiver wire hits at 2 p.m. ET every day (11 a.m. ET during the offseason) and right now there a was a lot of activity as NHL clubs look to get under the $88 million salary cap by Monday at 5 p.m.
The Islanders acquired Engvall in a trade with the Leafs on Feb. 28, 2023, for a third-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft. New York then signed him to a whopping seven-year contract worth $3 million a season.
It's highly unlikely and players will want to pick up Engvall on that type of term. If Engvall clears, Only $1.15 million of his $3 million can be buried and he'll still carry a cap charge of $1.85 million while not on the team's active roster. Although the term certainly helped keep Engvall's cap number down, that term is not looking good right now.
Drafted by the Maple Leafs in the seventh round (188th overall) in the 2014 NHL Draft, Engvall scored 57 goals and added 63 assists in five seasons with Toronto.
