Joseph Woll signed his name onto something a little different this past weekend.
A number of Maple Leafs, including Woll, Matthew Knies, and Max Domi were signing autographs at the Toronto Sport Card Expo on Sunday. Later in the day, a video surfaced online of a fan asking Woll to sign a brick because of the nickname, 'Brick Woll'.
"It was pretty funny. I was just surprised. I've never seen that," Woll said following Maple Leafs practice on Monday.
"There was plenty of space. Lots of space. It was a little heavy," he continued with a chuckle.
Funny enough, earlier on Sunday the 25-year-old netminder was asked what the craziest thing he signed was, to which he responded with, "I honestly don't know, I haven't really had anything."
If you asked Woll later that day, he would have a different answer to that question.
"[The fan] just walked up with a brick and I started laughing," he said. "And then, that day, I was signing a brick, signing an arm, like all this different stuff."
The nickname 'Brick Woll' has followed the 25-year-old for quite a long time. It even found its way into his social media username before he deleted his social media last year.
But instead of correcting everyone with how his last name is actually pronounced — 'Wole' — he just goes with it, while also having a nice laugh in the process.
"It's funny like our last name works with a lot of things. When I was growing up, I loved (Nikolai) Khabibulin, he was 'The Bulin Wall', but I could be 'The Berlin Woll'. There's a lot of [nicknames] — 'Wolly Mammoth', 'Rock and Woll', my family's heard it also. It's funny."
