Auston Matthews was not on the for practice on Wednesday as he continues to recover from an upper-body ailment sustained from the team's practice session on Tuesday.
Per the Maple Leafs, Matthews is missing the sessions due to maintenance, related to to the issue.
On Tuesday, Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube said it was "not serious" describing it as an "upper-body thing".
Although Matthews was given a "maintenance day", Berube stopped short of addressing the player's status for the next couple of games against the Montreal Canadiens.
"I'm not gonna comment on that," Berube said. "Hypothetical question, I can't answer that.
Calle Jarnkrok also did not participate due to a lower-body issue, which forced him to sit out of Tuesday's session as well.
The Maple Leafs shuffled up the training groups where there is now a clear separation as to who is part of a "main" group and who might be on the outside looking in.
With Matthews and Jarnkrok out of the lineup, the Leafs shuffled up the lines with Mac Domi moving to center a line with Mitch Marner and Matthew Knies, while William Nylander stayed in the middle alongside Bobby McMann and Nick Robertson. Pontus Holmberg occupied the right wing (likely as a placeholder) with Max Pacioretty and John Tavares.
"It's about time we get our team together and do things together. Chemistry is important, and combinations are important," Berube explained. "Just trying to get the structure down in our game with our group is important."
