Although the club did not take part in a game Friday, out-of-town losses by the Detroit Red Wings, Philadelphia Flyers and Washington Capitals allowed the Maple Leafs to mathematically secure their eighth consecutive berth into the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The Maple Leafs have a 43-23-9 record and sit in third place in the Atlantic Division. Although a long shot, the club could still finish in first place in the division as they sit 10 points back of the Boston Bruins, who have a 45-17-15 record,.
If the playoffs were to start on Saturday, the Leafs would visit the Florida Panthers, who sit in second place in the Atlantic with a 48-24-5 record.
The Maple Leafs won a playoff round for the first time in 19 years in 2023. They fell to the Panthers in five games during the second round.
The Tampa Bay Lightning also secured a playoff berth on Friday. They sit just two points back of the Maple Leafs with 93 points but have one fewer game remaining than Toronto.
Both Toronto and Tampa are set to meet again later this month.
The Maple Leafs are set to visit the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre on Saturday.
