McCabe took one shift on Thursday night in Dallas before leaving the game.

The Toronto Maple Leafs held their final practice of their regular season opener. Fraser Minten and Noah Gregor earn spots in the opening-night lineup.

Jake McCabe could be out of Toronto's lineup for the foreseeable future with an injury.

The 30-year-old defenseman looked to have pulled something on his first shift of Thursday's game against the Dallas Stars. McCabe only skated for 10 seconds before coming off and — during the first TV timeout — heading to the Maple Leafs' locker room. He didn't return.

McCabe was absent from Maple Leafs practice on Friday in Nashville. With the 30-year-old likely missing some time, Toronto recalled William Lagesson from the Marlies and sent Fraser Minten back to the WHL's Kamloops Blazers.

Head coach Sheldon Keefe didn't have an update on McCabe following practice on Friday because he was having an MRI at the same time as Toronto's skate. But Keefe did say the defenseman was going to "miss some time, it's just a matter of how much."

Toronto acquired McCabe in a trade back in February that also brought Sam Lafferty (who has since been traded to Vancouver) to the Maple Leafs. The veteran defenseman has had an up-and-down start to the season.

Keefe has described McCabe's game as "inconsistent" and "at times very good," to begin the year with Toronto. The 30-year-old has two years remaining on his contract which carries a $2 million AAV with the Maple Leafs.
