Knies left Maple Leafs practice early on Wednesday after falling awkwardly during a drill.

With William Nylander locked up for the long term, THN's David Alter breaks down what it means for the Toronto Maple Leafs moving forward.

Matthew Knies appears to be okay after a frightening incident at Maple Leafs' practice on Wednesday.

The 21-year-old fell awkwardly on his left leg during a drill and needed several teammates to help him exit the ice. He looked to be in considerable pain as he was helped to the dressing room.

Following the skate, though Auston Matthews said he saw Knies and it appears it's not as bad as first thought.

"We just saw him in the back, it appears to be nothing too serious," the 26-year-old said.

Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe added the same thoughts on Wednesday afternoon, confirming the 21-year-old won't be ruled out for Thursday's game against the New York Islanders.

"It looks good. I mean, we're not going to know more until tomorrow," Keefe said. "He's not ruled out for tomorrow."

This is good news for Knies as he continues to navigate through his rookie season in the NHL. The 21-year-old has skated for most of this year alongside Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner on Toronto's top line.

Through 36 games, Knies has eight goals and seven assists for 15 points.
