Abruzzese has appeared in 11 NHL games, registering one goal and two assists, since being drafted by Toronto in 2019.

Rogers Communications has purchased Bell Media's 37.5 percent stake in Toronto Maple Leafs' parent company MLSE. Operationally, what will change with how the team is run?

The Toronto Maple Leafs have made some cuts ahead of their penultimate pre-season game against the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday.

Toronto has placed forward Nick Abruzzese on waivers in an attempt to loan him to the AHL's Toronto Marlies. Matthew Barbolini, Jacob Frasca, Mathieu Gosselin, Braeden Kressler, Brandon Lisowsky, Robert Mastrosimone, Marko Sikic, Zach Solow, Sam Steves, and Ty Voit are among the forwards headed to the Marlies.

Defenders Matt Anderson, Jacob Bengtsson, Ryan McCleary, Tommy Miller, Rhett Parsons, Chaz Sharpe, and William Villeneuve, plus Dennis Hildeby and Vyacheslav Peksa have also been sent to the AHL club.

Jon Gillies, who signed a professional tryout contract with the Maple Leafs before training camp, is also among the goaltenders joining the Marlies.

Kressler, Voit, Villeneuve, Hildeby, and Peksa are all under contract with the Maple Leafs. The rest of the players are on AHL contracts.

Abruzzese signed a two-year, $1.55 million extension with Toronto as a restricted free agent on July 31, 2023. The 25-year-old fourth-round pick (124th overall) in 2019 had 16 goals and 36 assists in 71 games with AHL Toronto last season.

The Maple Leafs will be icing a roster with plenty of AHL-bound players on Thursday against the Detroit Red Wings. Roni Hirvonen, Alex Nylander (AHL contract), Cedric Pare, Jacob Quillan, Mikko Kokkonen, and Cade Webber, among others, are likely to join the Marlies at some point before the regular season begins.

AHL Toronto's home opener is on Saturday, Oct. 12 against the San Diego Gulls at 4:00 p.m. ET.
