Ty Voit's debut season in the AHL will have to wait until next October.
The 20-year-old fifth-round pick suffered a shoulder injury at the Traverse City Prospects Tournament in September and returned to full health at the beginning of December.
He played five games with the ECHL's Newfoundland Growlers, scoring two goals and six assists before joining the Marlies. However, just six minutes into his AHL debut on Dec. 20, Voit was hit and went awkwardly into the boards.
The 20-year-old left the game and didn't return. The following day at practice, Voit was seen wearing a sling as he watched the team skate.
On Tuesday, Marlies head coach John Gruden confirmed to reporters that Voit would have season-ending shoulder surgery, putting him out until training camp next September.
Voit was selected by the Maple Leafs in the fifth round (153rd overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft. Toronto signed him to an entry-level contract on Dec. 20, 2021, just partway through his second season with the OHL's Sarnia Sting.
In his final year in the OHL, Voit scored 24 goals and 81 assists in 67 games.
