The Toronto Maple Leafs appear to have made cuts to their training camp roster but haven't formally announced them.
Since training camp opened up, the Maple Leafs have had two groups of skaters take the ice for practice. However, on Monday, with just over a week until the season-opener in Montreal, the Maple Leafs are down to only one group of skaters for practice.
Easton Cowan and Nikita Grebenkin — plus professional tryout invites Max Pacioretty and Steven Lorentz — are among the forwards remaining with the Maple Leafs. Marshall Rifai is the lone potential Marlies-bound defenseman to stay with the NHL squad.
Other notes include Bobby McMann skating at practice on Monday after missing Saturday's skate due to maintenance. John Tavares, Calle Jarnkrok and Alex Steeves (lower body), Jani Hakanpaa (knee), and Connor Dewar (shoulder) before Toronto's practice.
They didn't participate in the full skate.
Berube said on Saturday that the hope is to get Hakanpaa skating with the group this week. Ben Danford, who suffered a concussion ahead of Toronto's Prospect Showdown vs. the Montreal Canadiens, was also on the ice with the injured group wearing a white jersey.
Toronto has two pre-season games remaining — in Detroit on Thursday and at home against the Red Wings on Saturday — before the regular season gets underway against the Montreal Canadiens on Oct. 9.
