The Toronto Maple Leafs, among "several other clubs," have shown interest in Columbus Blue Jackets left winger Mason Marchment. Acquiring the 31-year-old would mark a reunion for Marchment and the Leafs.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have been one of the loudest teams of this NHL off-season, and their noise appears to continue. Whether that's the trades that have already happened or rumors ahead of the draft, GM John Chayka has certainly been working the phones.
The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun reported on Friday morning that the Maple Leafs are one of multiple teams that have shown interest in left winger Mason Marchment.
Marchment, undrafted, began his career with the Maple Leafs' organization, with his first few years in professional hockey with the AHL's Toronto Marlies from 2015-16 to 2019-20. He did sign a two-year entry-level contract with the team, but ended up getting traded to the Florida Panthers for Denis Malgin in February 2020.
Now, based on LeBrun's reports, there's an opportunity for the Leafs to get their hands on Marchment once again.
"It sounds like there’s a robust market shaping up for Mason Marchment if he gets to free agency," LeBrun wrote. He also noted that, along with the Maple Leafs, the Montreal Canadiens and "several other clubs" have shown interest.
Marchment is a pending UFA as his four-year contract expires officially on July 1. His previous salary cap hit was $4.5 million, and with a handful of very strong campaigns in that stretch, it's fair to expect that he'll want a salary increase.
His best season came in 2023-24 when he recorded 22 goals and 53 points for the Dallas Stars. Marchment's latest tenure was a 39-game span with the Columbus Blue Jackets after the Seattle Kraken traded him there in December 2025. With the Blue Jackets, he put up 15 goals and 32 points while averaging a career-high 17:41 of ice time.
Though the 31-year-old's contract is expiring, Columbus is still working to sign him to a contract extension, according to LeBrun. And that's after the Blue Jackets acquired Valeri Nichushkin from the Colorado Avalanche, a player who plays a similar style of game to Marchment, and plays the same position.
"Even after the Nichushkin acquisition, Columbus hasn’t given up on trying to re-sign Marchment," LeBrun reported. "It feels like that decision will go to the wire Tuesday night/Wednesday morning, either way."
