A legendary captain returns home and a new architect takes the helm as the Toronto Maple Leafs begin the overhaul of their front office following a post-season absence.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have solidified their management structure.
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the organization is formally expected to announce that Mats Sundin is returning as Senior Executive Advisor of Hockey Operations.
The Maple Leafs confirmed the details later in the day.
Although there were initial questions regarding the extent of his involvement, Friedman reports that Sundin will be moving his family to Toronto for a full-time commitment.
Friedman also confirmed that John Chayka will be announced as the General Manager. The club is expected to formally make the announcement on Sunday, with an introductory press conference scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on Monday.
Regarding the new hierarchy, Chayka will report directly to MLSE President and CEO Keith Pelley, and will have the final say on all hockey decisions. While Tie Domi was reportedly involved in the process, Friedman reports there are currently no plans for the organization to hire him.
As far as Sundin's role, Pelley described it in the news release as "a focus on team culture, player development and leadership support."
The Maple Leafs parted ways with GM Brad Treliving in March 2026, and the search for his replacement has reached its conclusion. However, several questions remain. It is yet to be seen which members of the current management structure Chayka will retain, or whether he will decide to keep Craig Berube as head coach or move in a different direction. Berube currently has two years remaining on his contract.
Sun Media’s Steve Simmons first reported on Saturday that the Leafs had concluded their search and that a news conference was expected for Monday. A primary focus moving forward will be whether Chayka foresees a full rebuild or a retool of the club. The Leafs missed the playoffs for the first time in 10 years following a season in which they went 32-36-14.
