According to a report, the Calgary Flames are being patient waiting for teams to put a first-round draft pick on the table for the pending unrestricted free agent.
There continue to be several teams interested in acquiring Calgary Flames defenseman Chris Tanev and that includes the Toronto Maple Leafs, who have reportedly been trying to land him all season long.
According to TSN hockey insider Pierre LeBrun, the Dallas Stars have emerged as a front-runner to land the Toronto-born blueliner.
"They covet going out and getting a right-shot defenseman and he tops that list is our understanding," LeBrun said on the latest installment of Insider Trading. "And they've made it clear what they're willing to pay for Chris Tanev, but what that package doesn't include is a first-round pick."
Rumblings of Toronto's interest in Tanev date back to when the Leafs were also trying to acquire defenseman Nikita Zadorov, who was ultimately traded to the Vancouver Canucks. The Leafs do have their first-round pick in 2024 but do not have any second-round draft picks until 2027.
"Really that's why Chris Tanev hasn't moved (yet) because all of the teams that have shown interest — and we know that a dozen teams have reached out — nobody has slapped a first-round pick on the table," Lebrun added. "Which is why I think the Flames have been willing to be patient and see if the market plays out."
Lebrun reiterated that Tanev wants to be traded to a team with a chance to win the cup and mentioned Dallas, Toronto, the Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks as teams that fit that criteria.
The 34-year-old Tanev is in the final year of a four-year, $18 million contract. He has a goal and 13 assists in 56 games this season with the Flames.
