Report: William Nylander's Price Tag For a Contract Extension has 'Gone Up' Amid Historic Start to Season with Maple Leafs

Nylander is on a Leafs record 17-game point streak to begin the season with 12 goals and 15 assists in that span.

The Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman has struggled through his first 13 games of the season. Head coach Sheldon Keefe says the player is injured and working through some things.

William Nylander's value seems to increase every time he steps into an NHL game this season.

The 27-year-old kept his strong start to the year going while at the NHL Global Series in Sweden, continuing to produce at an expensive rate. Nylander had five points during their trip, including an overtime winner against the Minnesota Wild to cap off their stay in Stockholm, Sweden.

According to Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman, as Nylander's production continues, his price tag also rises in the process.

"The number has gone up," Friedman reported during Monday's edition of the Jeff Marek show. "I think the Leafs were hoping to get Nylander in the 8's or 9's. I just don't think that is realistic anymore."

Toronto and Nylander weren't reportedly close on a number during the summer, but both sides have been adamant that they'd like to get a deal done soon. Nylander is set to receive a significant raise on his next deal, given his last was a six-year contract with an AAV of just under $7 million.

Nylander leads the Maple Leafs in points with 27 and is one point off the league lead, behind Vancouver's Quinn Hughes, Elias Pettersson, and J.T. Miller. On Monday, the 27-year-old was named the NHL's second star of the week.

TSN insider Pierre LeBrun reported last week that although both sides have been quiet, that they're still working on getting an extension done.

"My understanding is both sides keep going back and forth," LeBrun said on Insider Trading last week. "They hope to get something done between now and July 1st, but it's a difficult contract to get done. William Nylander has been spectacular, his salary leverage keeps going up, but the Leafs, also, keep dealing with the salary cap."
