Multiple reports explain that the Toronto Maple Leafs and GM John Chayka have made several changes to the organization's staff over the past day or so. Here are some of the names that have been let go.
The Toronto Maple Leafs' staff has seen plenty of turnover over the past few days. The organization announced the changes to the team's coaching staff on Tuesday and named Steve Sullivan the head coach of the Toronto Marlies on Thursday.
Also on Thursday, reports have come out about several changes to the Maple Leafs' front office, now that the NHL draft and development camp have passed.
The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta was first to report on Thursday that assistant GM Darryl Metcalf was being let go by the Maple Leafs on Wednesday. Metcalf oversaw the team's hockey research and development, and has a history with the team in the analytics department dating back to the 2014-15 campaign.
Metcalf has been with the Maple Leafs organization for 12 years, the past four as an assistant GM.
Later that day, Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun confirmed the Metcalf news and added Mark Leach and Dave Morrison to the list of staff members who have been dismissed.
It's worth mentioning that there's a real possibility that more changes are on the way. The Toronto Sun's Steve Simmons also reported that the "Maple Leafs took the axe to 11 longtime employees on Wednesday."
Morrison has been a longtime member of the Leafs' organization, with his tenure beginning as an amateur scout in 2004-05. His most recent position was as a senior advisor of player personnel for the past three years.
Between the beginning and end of Morrison's tenure with the Leafs, the Toronto native spent several years as the director of amateur scouting, professional scouting, and player personnel.
As for Leach, he is relatively new to the Maple Leafs' staff, serving as the director of amateur scouting over the past two years. Before his days in Toronto, he spent 11 years with the Dallas Stars as an amateur scout and the previous 17 years in the same role with the Detroit Red Wings.
Leach was one of the main voices for the past draft. A draft class that impressed several prospect experts, seeing them earn multiple 'A' grades from their picks. Leach has been a very successful scout, as he was a member of the Red Wings for their last four Stanley Cups.
He has also helped the Stars select some stellar prospects, including impressive selections like Jason Robertson at 39th overall in 2017, Roope Hintz at 49th in 2015, Logan Stankoven at 47th in 2021, and several more.
