Reports: Mike Yeo Likely to Land With Senators, Not Maple Leafs, Could Mark Savard Return to Junior?

Both Yeo and Savard had been linked to Toronto as the Maple Leafs round out their coaching staff.

After another disappointing Toronto Maple Leafs playoff loss, it's time to break up the core four forwards and that might mean moving on from Mitch Marner, who becomes a free agent at the end of the 2024-25 season.

When the Vancouver Canucks and Mike Yeo announced a mutual parting of ways, speculation ran rampant about the Toronto-born Yeo possibly reuniting with newly-minted Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube.

That doesn't appear to be happening.

According to TSN's Darren Dreger, Yeo appears to be heading to the Ottawa Senators to join Travis Green's staff.

"I think Mike Yeo is going to land in Ottawa. That's the way it sounds,' Dreger said on TSN's First Up with Aaron Korolnek and Carlo Colaiacovo.

One day earlier, Rich Dhaliwal reported that Yeo and the Canucks had been talking. Brett Wallace reported that Yeo had indeed by hired by the Sens on his 'Coming In Hot' Senators podcast.

There's been no official announcement as of yet.

Another assistant linked to the Leafs is Marc Savard. The Calgary Flames announced that both the team and club mutually agreed to part ways.

Like Yeo, Savard has a history of working with Berube before and while it's a possibility, Dreger says that someone close to the situation didn't rule out the possibility of Savard returning to Junior to become a head coach.

"There's a couple of places that maybe fit the bill there. I'm not saying that's what he's going to do. That was thrown out by somebody who might know as a possibility," Dreger said.

Savard spent two seasons as a head coach with the Windsor Spitfires of the OHL before he was in charge of Calgary's power play that finished seventh-worst in the NHL last season.

It could be a while yet before Toronto finalizes its coaching staff. They still have decisions to make on their current assistant coaches like Mike Van Ryn, Dean Chynoweth and Guy Boucher. Manny Malhotra departed the Leafs to become the head coach of the Abbotsford Canucks, Vancouver's AHL affiliate.
