Social media was abuzz when Domi tweeted his support for the Toronto Blue Jays amid reports that Shohei Ohtani was closing on signing.
Max Domi thought his tweet was innocent enough.
Growing up in Toronto, the Toronto Maple Leafs forward is a big Toronto Blue Jays fan and tweeted about the team amid reports that free agent two-way player Shohei Ohtani was about to sign with the club.
"I was so pumped," Domi said on Saturday. "Honestly, I tweeted it out because I’m like ‘Hey, it looks like this is happening.’"
MLB Network's Jon Morosi tweeted on Friday that Ohtani was en route to Toronto and that began a crazy day that included people tracking a private plane that took off from John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California to Toronto.
That report ended up being false, with other MLB insiders reporting that Ohtani was still in California and had not made a decision on where he'd be playing baseball this season.
But as the plane was in the air, Domi was at an event and began to get a lot of messages about his tweet with people asking him for intel on Ohtani.
"I looked at my phone and my friends and family are texting me like ‘what do you know?'" he said. "I’m like ‘When did I become the MLB insider?' I have no idea what’s going on. I don’t know the guy at all. I’m just a Jays fan that is really hopeful that he comes and still hopeful, So we’ll see."
Ohtani is the biggest baseball name in free agency and the Blue Jays are believed to be a handful of teams in the running to land the player who can both pitch and bat.
