Signed to a one-year deal this summer, the veteran goaltender was called up on an emergency basis.

The Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman has struggled through his first 13 games of the season. Head coach Sheldon Keefe says the player is injured and working through some things.

The Toronto Maple Leafs will dress a new goaltender for the first time this season when Martin Jones will sit on the bench to back up goaltender Joseph Woll.

The club called up Jones on an emergency basis before the team's morning skate on Saturday ahead of their game against the Boston Bruins.

Ilya Samsonov, Toronto's other goaltender on the roster is unavailable due to illness.

The Maple Leafs signed Jones to a one-year, $875,000 on Aug. 9 as the team's third goaltending option after the 33-year-old spent the 2022-23 NHL season with the Seattle Kraken. During that season, the North Vancouver, BC native posted an .887 save percentage in 48 games with the club.

There was concern about whether or not the Leafs would be able to keep Jones beyond training camp since the club had trouble retaining goaltenders who required waivers on their roster.

The Leafs were able to sneak Jones through the waiver wire successfully on Oct. 10.

In five games with the Toronto Marlies, Jones is 2-1-1 with an .870 save percentage.

Woll will make his career-high fourth consecutive NHL start against the Bruins on Saturday. The goaltender had outperformed Samsonov as of late and with games occurring every other night, Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe looked at it as an opportunity to have one goaltender take the starter's job by the horns.

"I looked at it that we'd probably go with one guy, I didn't know quite who'd that be," Keefe explained. "Woll played well in Pittsburgh so we gave him the nod to start the week and we haven't looked back.

Woll has a .949 save percentage in his last two starts in goal. He is 8-5-0 this season with a .917 save percentage.
