Lajoie has played seven games with the Marlies this season, while Benoit has only appeared in two.

Timothy Liljegren is headed to LTIR, allowing the Maple Leafs to call up a couple of defensemen.

Liljegren was injured during Thursday's game against the Boston Bruins after falling into the boards awkwardly. Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe said following the game that Liljegren's injury could have him out for "significant" time, and it appears that'll be the case.

Coming up from the Marlies are both Simon Benoit and Max Lajoie. Neither of the call-ups appeared in last night's Marlies game against the Laval Rocket.

Benoit has only seen two games with the Marlies, while Lajoie has played in every game except the one he missed on Friday night. Lajoie, too, has been skating in Toronto's top four, plus he's quarterbacked the Marlies' top power play unit.

"Obviously, coming into the season, last year I had a good season, but I just wanted to show them (the Leafs) what I can do," Lajoie said earlier this week. "Obviously the points aren't there yet, but I've been feeling better and better every game, and that's what I'm going to build on."

With Liljegren moving to LTIR, it allowed the Maple Leafs to call up two defensemen.

Benoit has played more on the right side in his career, but Lajoie was paired up with William Lagesson for parts of last season with the Chicago Wolves, who won the AHL's Calder Cup. Lagesson has been with the Maple Leafs since Jake McCabe's injury.

And it appears Toronto is going more with the familiarity of Lajoie and Lagesson, who'll play together on the third pair against the Sabres.

The duo of Morgan Rielly and T.J. Brodie will remain, as will the pairing of Mark Giordano and John Klingberg.
