Malgin's long-term deal in Switzerland seemingly puts an end to the Swiss forward's NHL ambition for quite some time.
Denis Malgin is going home.
Zurich SC posted on their official Twitter account that the former Maple Leafs forward is returning to the club.
The 26-year-old Malgin signed a five-year deal with the team, according to a translated release. This seemingly puts the Swiss forward's attempt at returning to the NHL in the rear-view mirror for the long term.
Malgin spent two seasons with Zurich from 2014-2016 before making his debut in the NHL with the Florida Panthers where he spent parts of four seasons with the club. The forward was traded to the Maple Leafs on Feb. 19, 2020, in exchange for forward Mason Marchment. Malgin's first tenure with the Leafs was limited to just eight games due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Leafs loaned Malgin to Lausanne HC for the 2020-21 season.
Before the 2021-22 season, Malgin was tendered a qualifying offer by the Maple Leafs, but elected to return to Zurich SC due to a lack of guaranteed money at the NHL level. He led the club in scoring with 21 goals and 31 assists in 52 games.
The Leafs signed Malgin to a one-year deal for the 2022-23 season. He had two goals and two assists in 23 games before he was traded to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for forward Dryden Hunt. Malgin had 11 goals and six assists in 42 games and played in seven playoff games for the club. He was not tendered a qualifying offer by the Avalanche this summer.
