Samsonov's arbitration filing opens the door for the Maple Leafs to use the second buyout window.
It looks like Ilya Samsonov is the only Maple Leaf to file for salary arbitration this summer.
The 26-year-old restricted free agent was one of 22 players across the NHL who elected salary arbitration on Wednesday.
The Maple Leafs qualified the three of Samsonov, Nick Abruzzese, and Semyon Der-Aguchintsev on June 30th, just one day before NHL Free Agency opened up.
Samsonov, who appeared in 42 regular season games last year, had a 27-10-5 record with a .919 save percentage. In the postseason, the 26-year-old had a 4-4-0 record with a .898 save percentage.
With Samsonov filing for arbitration, it opens up the door for Toronto to have a second buyout period after the Maple Leafs and the 26-year-old's arbitration case is awarded or settled.
According to NorthStarBets' NHL insider Chris Johnston, the Maple Leafs' "Plan B in their back pocket," could be that of waiving Matt Murray in the second buyout period.
Murray is heading into the final year of his four-year deal he signed with the Ottawa Senators back in 2020 that carries an AAV of $6.25 million.
If the Maple Leafs were to buy Murray out, his cap hit on Toronto would be $687,500 in the first year and $2 million in the second year, according to PuckPedia.com.
The second buyout window for the Maple Leafs, which lasts 48 hours, will begin three days after the arbitration case is awarded or settled.
