The Maple Leafs and William Nylander's camp have been trying to get a deal done since prior to the NHL Draft in Nashville.
It appears as though contract negotiations between William Nylander and the Maple Leafs aren't going as everyone would have hoped.
According to TSN hockey insider, Chris Johnston, on the Chris Johnston Show, the negotiations between both sides aren't "going well."
"There were a lot of discussions down at the draft in Nashville between the team (Toronto) and his agent," Johnston said. "And they just see the world differently at this point in time."
Johnston goes on to report that Nylander believes he's a $10 million dollar player, while the Maple Leafs are trying to get him at a lower number.
"He (Nylander) has a reasonable argument based on the points he's had," continued Johnston. "But I just don't see how the Leafs can ever make that work.
"And so ultimately, as they work through this a little further, I think that there's going to have to be a decision on Nylander's end about how badly he wants to be a Leaf, how much less than that number he might be able to take because I would be stunned if we saw Toronto sign him to a contract that takes him into that realm."
The 27-year-old winger had a career-high in goals (40) and assists (47) in the regular season last year. He also had four goals and six assists in 11 playoff games for Toronto, against the Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers.
Nylander has one year remaining on his current contract which carries an AAV of $6.962 million.
