With the Toronto Maple Leafs continuing their search for their new GM, experience continues to be the name of the game as Doug Wilson's name is the latest to surface.
Could Doug Wilson become the next GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs?
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported that his sources told him the Maple Leafs have been on contact with the former San Jose Sharks GM
"I think they've been in contact with him, too," Friedman said on the 32 Thoughts segment during Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday.
Wilson served as the general manager of the Sharks for 19 seasons before stepping down in 2022 to focus on his health. During his 19-year tenure as GM, only the Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins won more regular season games than the Sharks.
A consistent playoff performer, the Sharks never won a Stanley Cup under Wilson, but went to the playoffs for 14 of those seasons and went to the Stanley Cup Final in 2016 before losing to the Penguins.
Friedman said the only in-person interview he's been able to confirm is with former Calgary Flames general manager Brad Treliving.
By all accounts, Treliving appears to be a front-runner for the Maple Leafs' open GM position. The club announced 10 days ago that it was not renewing the contract of Kyle Dubas. Other GM candidates that have been linked to the Maple Leafs include, but are not limited to, Marc Bergevin, Jason Botterill and Peter Chiarelli.
Dubas has been linked to the Penguins' front-office vacancy.
