The 27-year-old has one year remaining in his contract with the Maple Leafs and is eligible to sign an extension.

Along with signing players this summer, the Maple Leafs reportedly looked at also trading forward William Nylander.

Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman joined Halford & Brough in the Morning on Monday to discuss his conversation with Vancouver Canucks forward Elias Pettersson last week.

The insider also shared the latest involving the Maple Leafs and Nylander.

"I do believe, that he (Nylander) and his circle, are along the lines of, 'If no one else is going to take a hair cut, I'm not going to take a hair cut,'" Friedman reported.

"I think they looked at trading him. I don't think they liked what was out there. I mean, he did score 40 goals last year. He's a really talented guy, and in the playoffs, he was involved in a couple of their really successful moments against Tampa Bay. I think they know that and recognize that.

"[Toronto] didn't like what was out there and we'll see."

Nylander has been eligible for an extension since July 1, but both parties reportedly haven't been close on money.

Earlier this summer, TSN's Chris Johnston reported that the 27-year-old was looking for a near $10 million AAV while Toronto wanted something lower.

"I would be stunned if we saw Toronto sign him to a contract that takes him into that realm," Johnston reported on The Chris Johnston Show in July.

Nylander put up career numbers this past season, scoring 40 goals and 47 assists in 82 games. The 27-year-old also had a productive playoffs, putting up 10 points (four goals, six assists) in 11 games.

The 2014 first-round pick has scored 430 points (177 goals, 253 assists) in 521 career NHL games.
