Keefe and Leafs GM Brad Treliving have also begun a search to replace former assistant Spencer Carbery.

It appears as though Sheldon Keefe will be back behind the bench for the Toronto Maple Leafs this upcoming season.

According to TSN hockey insider Darren Dreger, Leafs GM Brad Treliving and Sheldon Keefe have both begun the process of filling the vacant assistant coach position made available when Spencer Carbery left to become the head coach of the Washington Capitals.

Keefe has one year remaining on his existing contract as head coach of the Maple Leafs. According to Dreger, discussions about a contract extension are expected to occur this summer.

The Maple Leafs have undergone a series of changes in the front office over the last month. Kyle Dubas was dismissed as general manager on May 19 and replaced by Treliving on May 31.

In his introductory news conference as the new GM of the Maple Leafs, Trelving identified several priorities, including meeting with Keefe to discuss the coach's future.

Keefe has a 166-71-30 (.678) record in four seasons as bench boss of the Leafs, but has just one playoff series win during his tenure.
