Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports - Toronto Maple Leafs Secure Pontus Holmberg with Two-Year Contract Worth $1.6 Million

Pontus Holmberg has avoided restricted free agency and has signed a two-year, $1.6 million contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs, the team announced on Wednesday.

Holmberg appeared in 37 regular season games for the Maple Leafs in his rookie season and scored five goals and eight assists. But it was his play without the puck that definitely impressed the staff.

The Swedish forward impressed at the club's prospects tournament in Traverse City, Michigan last fall and has quickly adapted to the speed of the NHL game. Holmberg made his NHL debut on November 2, 2022, and contributed to the penalty kill and was been praised by Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe for his overall play and ability to do what is asked of him on the ice.

Splitting his time between the Maple Leafs and Toronto Marlies last season, Holmberg could see more time an everyday player in the NHL this season He was initially selected by Toronto in the sixth round (156th overall) of the 2018 NHL Draft.
