Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe had one more year remaining in his contract prior to signing this extension.

The Maple Leafs and GM Brad Treliving have checked another box on their summer to-do list.

Toronto has signed head coach Sheldon Keefe to a multi-year contract extension.

"Since I've joined the Maple Leafs, I've been very impressed with Sheldon," Treliving said in a statement. "He has shown great leadership skills with his staff and our players, and has a clear vision for this team and where it needs to get to.

"Sheldon has established himself as one of the top coaches in the league and I look forward to working alongside him as we head into the upcoming season."

This past spring, Keefe led the Maple Leafs to their first playoff series win since 2004. The 42-year-old was originally hired by former Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas in 2019, following then-head coach Mike Babcock's dismissal.

Prior to becoming the Maple Leafs' head coach, Keefe coached the Toronto Marlies for five seasons. The Marlies had a 199-89-22-9 record in 319 games under Keefe.

During that time, Toronto also captured their first-ever Calder Cup championship in 2018.

Earlier this summer, Treliving confirmed that Keefe would return as Toronto's bench boss. And although he did say they'd discuss an extension, it seemed as though at this point in the summer now, one wasn't going to get done.

"We'll deal with that at the appropriate time," Treliving said in late June.

According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, Keefe's extension is for two more years following the 2023-24 season.

"Coaching this team has been a great privilege, and I'm truly excited at the opportunity to continue building towards our ultimate goal," Keefe said in a statement following his extension.

"I'm thankful for the support from MLSE and its ownership along with Brendan Shanahan and Brad Treliving, who I've really enjoyed getting to know and work with this off-season. We have so many great players and people within our organization that I'm grateful to work with, and together our commitment to team success remains steadfast."

In parts of four seasons as head coach of the Maple Leafs, Keefe has a record of 166-71-30. The team, since Keefe was brought in, has a .622 winning percentage, ranking fourth in the NHL.
