The Utah Mammoth added a handful of veteran players to their roster so far this summer. One of the biggest signings of the offseason was Brandon Tanev. So, let's get to know him better and see what he brings to the roster.
Tanev, 33, started his NHL career 10 years ago with the Winnipeg Jets. In his first stint with the Jets, he played parts of four seasons. He appeared in 195 games and scored 24 goals and 27 assists for 51 points, along with 601 hits. This is where he became a fan favourite and earned attention for his infamous team photo pictures.
After his time in Winnipeg, he signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins during 2019 free agency. He agreed to a six-year, $21 million deal that would take him through his prime NHL years. Unfortunately, he only spent two seasons there, appearing in 100 games and recording 18 goals and 23 assists for 41 points and 383 hits.
His time in Pittsburgh was cut short after the 2021 season when he was left unprotected in the Seattle Kraken expansion draft and selected by the new franchise. That’s where he played out the bulk of that six-year contract. He spent almost four full seasons in Seattle, skating in 238 games with 41 goals and 42 assists for 83 points, as well as 558 hits and 243 blocks.
At the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline, he was dealt back to the Jets by the Kraken to finish out his contract. In his return to Winnipeg, he played 19 games and chipped in five points.
Now after 10 years, he’s decided to take his talents to Utah and bring his energetic, physical, relentless style of play. He will quickly become a fan favourite alongside Liam O'Brien. The two of them have big personalities that Mammoth fans will love.

Utah's Nate Schmidt Has Big Opportunity With New Club
For a lot of Utah Mammoth fans, Nate Schmidt might be best known as the veteran defenseman who signed for under $1 million with the Florida Panthers and went on to win the Stanley Cup. But that’s not the whole story. Sure, he earned that deal, but Schmidt’s had a pretty solid NHL career. And if he can tap into that level again in Utah, this could quietly become one of the best signings of the summer.
